The six winners of 2015 Best Apprentice Competition organised by the Automobile Training Board under the Vocational Training Council (VTC) will be arranged for a visit to the Volkswagen plant in Shanghai and the 16th Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition for enhancement of skill level.

or its 30th year, the Best Apprentice Competition organised by the VTC Automobile Training Board shortlisted 11 apprentices into the final round whom were divided into two groups, namely the Vehicle Mechanic/ Electrician group, and the Vehicle Body Repair/ Painting group. The former tested on the maintenance and measurement skills of engine, as well as those on braking and air-conditioning systems. The latter competed on the repair of damaged body panel, welding body, replacement and adjustment of door and pattern and mending coat of vehicle body to recover an indented surface.

The officiating guest, Member of Legislative Council The Honourable LO Wai-kwok said, “Apart from testing the skills of competitors in auto maintenance and raising awareness of the importance of formal training among employers and employees, the Best Apprentice Competition also enhances understanding of the public about the industry. “The extensive use of low carbon and electronic technologies in vehicles and availability of precision inspection equipment over time will translate into a growing demand for qualified maintenance personnel and a higher expectation of the skills required.”

LEUNG Tat-ming, Chairman of the VTC Automobile Training Board cum Convenor of the Working Party on Best Apprentice Competition, said, “Since the auto industry joined the Earn & Learn Pilot Scheme for Automobile Industry in the fourth quarter of 2014, the number of new registered apprentices has risen from 150 to 230 in the span of one year. The response is encouraging. It is hoped that industry will continue to support the Pilot Scheme to attract more entrants to pursue long term development in our trade.”

The Earn and Learn Pilot Scheme is an initiative launched last year between the Government, the automobile industry and the VTC, with a view to providing aspiring youngsters with a structured apprenticeship and a clear progression pathway. The participants can learn related knowledge and skills while receiving subsidies and enjoying a specific pay package at the same time. The Pilot Scheme provides an ideal progression route for young people.

The Automobile Training Board is one of the 26 training boards and general committees under the VTC. The boards and committees conduct regular manpower surveys to collect updated information on the manpower situation of their respective industries to forecast manpower growth, ascertain training demands and formulate proposals to employers, and education and training providers to meet the demands for industry professionals.
