HKDI students sweep all top prizes of Hong Kong Lighting Design Competition & My Favourite Lighting Design Award

On the strength of their innovativeness and practical design, works of students of the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) dominated the student group of the 8th Hong Kong Lighting Design Competition and went on to win the top three prizes and the My Favourite Lighting Design Award. The theme of this year’s competition is “enlightenment”, which aims to showcase the meaning of light.

The Champion HKDI student LI Cui-en of the Higher Diploma in Interior Design programme named her work “Without Light Without Shadow“, Light needs shadow to accompany while shadow enhances the importance of light source. Light refracts, creating different reflection of lights and shades, where sometimes it may be bright and sometimes it maybe dim. Light and shadow are inseparable in Cui-en’s creative piece embracing their existence for a wonderful world.

The First and Second runners-up winners also came from the same programme of HKDI. The 1st Runner-up OR Wai‐man named her work “Caterpillar”, which is inspired by the origami arts. Buyers can create their lamps in different sizes and shapes by assembling repeatable modules according to their own styles and favours. Inspired by the birth of Caterpillars, creators are left with delightful and unforgettable memories through the construction process. The 2nd Runner-up YIM Tung‐ming named his work “See more by rotation” as in darkness, light shines straight in one direction. Only by changing the direction of light will it shine in more places. “See more by rotation” uses the maglev technology and wireless to transmit electricity and change the direction of the light as well as adding some fun to the light, acting as a talking point between people.

The newly added My Favourite Lighting Design Award this year was voted by the public, which was clinched by another HKDI student in Exhibition Design Daphne WONG. Her work, “Rainbow”, is based on the design of a prism which can be used to break light up into its constituent spectral colours (the colours of rainbow). It shows the beauty of light. The white light is formed by different colours, like a reflection of our life.

The annual Hong Kong Lighting Design Competition is organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council with a view to raising the standard and quality of local lighting design. This year over 100 entries were received and the works were judged by their originality, aesthetic appeal, functionality and market potentials.
